Six common communication mistakes in agriculture and how to fix them

Agriculture is changing, and the way we talk about it needs to change too. From shifting policies to sustainability targets, the sector is under pressure. But while farming evolves, the communications around it haven’t always kept pace.

1. Speaking at farmers, not with them

Too often, communications are top-down, assuming farmers just need more information to change behaviour. But farmers aren’t a passive audience; they’re experts, business owners, and stewards of the land.

2. Over-promising and under-connecting

Whether it’s a shiny sustainability strategy or a new innovation, if you’re not explaining how something works and why it matters, it won’t land. Trust in the sector is hard-won, and vague promises don’t help.

Fix it: Be specific. Spell out the what, why and how in plain English. Link back to farmers’ realities. And if the benefits will take time to show, say that. Transparency builds long-term credibility in agricultural communications.

3. Mistaking marketing for strategy

Great agri comms isn’t just about a one-off campaign or jazzy marketing materials. It’s about building alignment internally and trust externally over time. But many organisations are still treating comms as an afterthought – one of the most avoidable communications mistakes.

Fix it: Bring strategic communications in early. Align your messages across teams. Set goals, measure progress, and make sure your comms are helping you hit your sustainability and commercial targets. This is where we come in.

4. Taking a one-size-fits-all approach

Ag comms that sound polished but placeless rarely land well. A message that could apply to any sector, anywhere, won’t resonate with people who live and work on the land. Farming is regional, seasonal and proudly rooted – and your comms should be too.

Fix it: Sound like someone who’s walked the field, not just read the report. Tailor your content to reflect local priorities and pressures.  Don’t just talk about ‘British farming’, show that you understand what it means in Cornwall, Caithness or Carmarthenshire. Use imagery, examples and language that reflect the realities of the local landscape. Attention to detail and showing you understand goes a long way in building trust. 

5. Avoiding the hard stuff

Climate change. Water quality. Land use. Public perception. These are complex, sometimes controversial topics and it’s tempting to dodge them. But silence speaks volumes and can be one of the most damaging communication mistakes. 

Fix it: Tackle complexity with clarity and courage. Don’t be afraid to acknowledge tensions or trade-offs. Farmers want honesty, not perfection. And well-handled comms can build resilience, even when the answers aren’t simple.

6. Sticking to the same channels

Still relying on the same channels you used ten years ago? Today’s audiences expect more. Farmers are increasingly digital-savvy, stakeholders are time-poor, and the news cycle moves fast. If your channels haven’t evolved, your impact won’t either.

Fix it: Rethink your formats and consider a hybrid approach. Short-form video, social media content, webinars and podcast guest slots can all boost reach, especially when combined with more traditional channels. Make sure you’re telling your story where your audience is already paying attention.
